My brother and I made off-grid communication accessible to everyone!

Meet Daniel and Jorge Perdomo founders of slick, off-grid communication device GoTenna. Daniel and Jorge founded GoTenna in November 2012 and since then they managed to  cultivated super dedicated team of 20 individuals, and managed to secure retail partnerships with industry giants such as Amazon and REI.

Journey

My brother / co-founder Jorge and I were inspired to create goTenna four years ago, after Hurricane Sandy hit us in New York City. Peering at an eerily black Manhattan skyline from across the East River in Brooklyn, and listening to a transistor radio as then-Mayor Bloomberg proclaimed that over a quarter of cell towers were down, leaving huge swaths of the city completely without power, got me thinking.

Don’t take rejection personally, and listen to your gut about feedback. You can’t crowdsource everything, and you also don’t know everything — so there has to be a delicate balance inside you guiding the way.

Our communications infrastructure tends to fail us when we need it most. Jorge and I wanted to empower people to communicate no matter whether centralized communications networks were available (or affordable), using the very same smartphones all of us already carry around in our pockets anyway. The result was goTenna, a small, rugged device that pairs with your smartphone to enable you to text and share your location with other users, without the need for cell networks, WiFi or satellites. With goTenna, users are able to communicate in any ‘no service’ scenario, whether that’s backcountry hiking, traveling abroad, or contacting family members during a natural disaster.

Since goTenna’s inception, we’re happy to share that we’ve sold and shipped to customers spanning the Bay Area & NYC to more rural states like Alaska & Wyoming, enabling users across the country to communicate off the grid. We’ve also raised close to $10M in funding from top investors and secured retail partnerships with the likes of Amazon and REI. Most recently, we announced a new product, goTenna Mesh, the first 100% off-grid, long-range, mobile consumer-ready mesh network.

Who I look up to

Helen Greiner was a co-founder of iRobot and is now the CTO of CyPhyWorks, both robotics companies. I really admire women who have forged a distinct path in the hard-science arenas; on top of being a huge fan of female engineers even though I am not one myself.
